Ship "Index".
15). Frigates, Type 22s.
This
class of Frigate, designed as a replacement for the "Leander" class,
ended up being in the order of twice its original designed displacement upon delivery,
and
was of a similar physical size to the "County Class" destroyers of the
1960's.
It speaks volumes for the adaptability of the original
"Type 12 / Leander"
hull form - seen in site section 13 - when it is realised that,
nearly 20 years after they took to the
water, the latest batch 3 "Broad Beamed Leanders" still retained most of the
capability of these much larger ships,
and yet even now these "Type 22's" have had to go through
various "stretches" and alterations.
This is in order to keep pace with the rapidly
advancing weapons technology of the late 1980's and 1990's.
Now
we find, in early 2011, this whole class of "Frigate" is yet another
victim of our "Coalition Governments Cutbacks".
They will all be gone
by May 2011, along with much else of our once great Royal Navy!!
